Practicing Audiology at Children’s of Alabama
Missy Kemp is a Senior Audiologist at Children’s of Alabama. She has been a part of the Children’s team for 12 years. Her journey here started as a part-time employee, and today she is a tenured member of our hospital team. Her time at Children’s has been exciting and full of career growth opportunities.
A Look Inside the Audiology Team
“I work with a great team of audiologists. Our team is unique because there are 10 of us, and collectively we have over 100 years of experience. Very rarely do you have that many audiologists in one setting, and it makes for a vast and dynamic environment that many others are rarely afforded. We are able to mentor and learn from each other; we all appreciate each other’s dedication and skills.
We also have a variety of patients, which makes the job interesting. For example, we cover the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) clinic; the inpatient population; and multidisciplinary clinics, such as the cleft lip/cleft palate and the medical autism.”
Following a Passion at Children’s
“I love audiology because it allows me to see many different patients every day. Typically, when our team sees a patient it is to perform hearing tests, which is something I really enjoy doing. Because we are the only freestanding pediatric hospital in the state, we see patients from all parts of Alabama and the Southeast. There is always something new to learn, there is always something you’ve never seen before, and there are always new things I need to look up and research—it’s what I love most about this job.”
Supported by Leadership
“The leadership at Children’s is committed to providing the necessary resources for our department. Our tests require multiple pieces of equipment and our leaders ensure we have access to the latest technology. Having access to the most cutting-edge tools enables us to use new and innovative ways to help our patients.”
Playing a Part in Holistic Care
“I’ve enjoyed developing my career in the Audiology Department at Children’s. The experiences I’ve had over the last 12 years have encouraged me to look at pediatric healthcare holistically, instead of just focusing on the audiology piece. I’ve learned that treating a child is about more than just caring for their hearing. Looking at the whole picture, including the family and their environment, is integral. All of it matters and makes a difference in how we treat the child.”
A Strong Team Culture
“Everyone at Children’s, and especially our team members in the Audiology Department, all have the same passion for providing care, which makes working here the best. Being outgoing, flexible, hard-working, and having the desire to want to help people are key characteristics that define the culture here.”
