Career Paths on the Respiratory Care Team

Since opening the doors at Children’s of Alabama, our hospital has grown from a modest 11-bed infirmary housed in a local residence to a 332-bed facility that’s the third largest pediatric medical center in the United States. Our growth has allowed us to provide care to more patients as we’ve expanded, and it’s also allowed our employees, like Jason Greene, to grow with us.

Jason has been with Children’s of Alabama since 1993. He first started at Children’s as a Respiratory Care student and has since had a career full of opportunities and professional development.

Throughout his time at Children’s, Jason spent the majority of his career as a Staff Therapist in different units, including Acute Care, Pediatric ICU, Pulmonary Care and Progressive Care. As Jason began settling down in his personal life, including marriage and children of his own, he decided it was time to switch from night shifts to weekday shifts. In switching his shift schedule, he was given the opportunity to move up to Supervisor of Respiratory Care.

Soon after securing the Supervisor of Respiratory Care role, another opportunity presented itself to Jason: becoming the Manager of Respiratory Care role. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, he would have to return to school for a Bachelor’s degree. Though it was a daunting task, Jason remembers his manager’s encouragement, asking him, “What’s stopping you?”

Today, Jason thrives as our Respiratory Care Manager while juggling a full schedule of being back in school and spending time with his family. Though it’s a busy time in his life, Jason sees working at Children’s on the Respiratory Care Unit as a very rewarding job.

“There’s a very harmonious environment in the respiratory department. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and a great department. Our staff cares about the purpose of what we do every day: saving children’s lives.”

Jason believes it is important to challenge his staff like he was challenged to further his education.

“It is important for me to push my staff to continue learning and improving to become the  best therapists they can be for the children. They have to be prepared to deal with all types of sick children, including our neonatal patients that cannot yet communicate.”

Beyond professional growth, Jason emphasized the growth of the technology we utilize in our Respiratory Care Unit.

“The technology and equipment at Children’s is cutting edge and well maintained. We strive to keep our technology current to benefit both the patients and the staff utilizing it.”

It’s exciting for Jason to see his staff have just as many professional development opportunities as he had.

“Within our department, we have therapists who are given the opportunity to work with the Pulmonary and research units, and also discharge planning for chronic patients.”

For all candidates looking to join our team, Jason believes you can have a rewarding career at Children’s, “If you work hard, and dedicate yourself to the patients and job.”
