The Fast Paced Life of Our Emergency Department Nurses with Jane-Anne Elliott

When Jane-Anne Elliot, RN, was graduating from nursing school, she knew that she wanted to work in a pediatric setting. After graduating, since February 2016, she has called Children’s of Alabama home.

“When I came to Children’s I immediately fell in love and knew this was the place for me. I was so excited when I got the job on the spot at the first choice I had applied.”

The Full Scope of the Emergency Department

Working in the Emergency Department (ED) means Jane-Anne has a fast-paced job while being surrounded by a team who offers her support and opportunities to grow.

“Our team in the ED is very diverse. We have a wide range of experience – anywhere from senior nurses who have been here for many years to newer nurses like me. It is a great environment to be in because there is such a big pool of information and knowledge at your fingertips. It is a great mix.”

Each team member in the ED plays a specific role in the everyday actions that happen within the pediatric ED. Every nurse and interdisciplinary team member has a significant role in the success of our department.

“We have nurses that love working with trauma patients, nurses who love working with injuries or orthopedics, and nurses who love working with respiratory problems. You name it and there is someone who has their own favorite specialty where they excel.”

Commitment to teamwork is something Jane-Anne believes that everyone must have to work in the ED.

“In order to be in this fast-paced environment you have to have your fellow teammates’ support and you have to trust that they are going to support you. Otherwise it just won’t work. This fast paced environment functions best when everybody is helping each other out.”

Children’s is a unique environment to work in, and there’s plenty to love about being part of the team here. Jane-Anne shares why joining the ED team at Children’s was a great decision.

“The best part of working in the ED at Children’s is that we get to see a little bit of everything. I love going into work and not knowing what is going to happen that day or what my assignments will be. We are the first line of treatment that these patients see before they are taken to their specialized unit.”

The ED team specializes in being prepared for the unknown. Our nurses and staff have to be ready for anything and know a little bit of everything to stabilize our patients.
