Innovating Healthcare Through Technology with Eric Brown

Eric Brown serves as a Software Architect on the Information Technology (IT) team at Children’s of Alabama. With a background in electrical and software engineering, Eric has always had an interest in the medical field and originally studied biomedical engineering before pursuing a career in technology.

“My background is electrical and software engineering, but I’ve always had an interest in the medical field. I originally studied biomedical engineering and even considered medical school. But at my core, I’m a builder. That’s just who I am, so it makes sense that I landed here.”

Today, Eric works closely with departments across the hospital to identify challenges and develop technology solutions that improve workflows and patient care. His role allows him to collaborate with a wide range of professionals, from physicians and nurses to Human Resources and Corporate Compliance staff.

Must-Haves for a Successful Children’s of Alabama IT Professional

1. Problem-Solving Mindset

“As a software architect, I do a lot of discovery meetings with employees throughout the hospital. I meet with these teams and listen to the issues they’re facing in their workflows, then help them by finding technology solutions.”

2. Collaboration and Communication

“One thing I love is that we service all of the hospital, so I meet with everyone from doctors and nurses to Corporate Compliance and Human Resources.”

3. Respect for Diverse Perspectives

“There’s a place for everyone, no matter what you want to do in IT. We have some people who have been here for a long time and people like me that have been in the IT world for years but are relatively new to the medical field. It creates a lot of diversity and different ideas, but at the end of the day everyone respects everyone else’s opinions because we’re all in it for the same goal.”

4. Passion for Continuous Improvement

“One project that sticks out in my mind was working with the triage phone team. They were struggling with workflows, and we presented a solution to them that could reduce callback time to the patient and increase transparency of information with the physician group. That was one of my favorites because that group was a little bit behind technically, and when you take them to the next level, they’re just so excited. They loved the product we made for them, and now other teams in the hospital want something similar.”

5. Commitment to Growth

“I’m happy with where I am and I love what I’m doing. The future here is what you make of it, and I know our supportive management and leadership teams help with fulfilling that future.”

The Information Technology team at Children’s of Alabama continues to play a critical role in supporting the hospital’s mission through innovation and technology. If you are passionate about solving problems, collaborating with others, and making an impact behind the scenes, a career in IT at Children’s of Alabama may be the perfect fit.
