Patient Care Support Roles: The Front Door to a Career in Pediatric Healthcare
If you’ve ever thought about working in healthcare but weren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone. Many people assume they need years of schooling before they can make a real impact in a hospital. The truth is far more encouraging: At Children’s of Alabama, you can begin a meaningful, patient‑facing career with just a little experience, a lot of heart, and a desire to grow.
Patient care support roles—especially Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) and similar positions—are often the first step into a long, rewarding future in pediatric healthcare. These roles let you learn on the job, build confidence, and discover where you want your career to go next.
What Patient Care Support Roles Really Are
Patient Care Technicians and other support roles are the backbone of the care team. These jobs are hands‑on, people‑centered positions designed for individuals who want to help patients directly, even if they’re just starting out.
In simple terms, PCTs help ensure that children and families feel supported, safe, and cared for during their hospital stay. You don’t need advanced medical training to begin—just a commitment to showing up, learning, and being part of a team that puts patients first.
These roles are intentionally accessible. They’re built for early‑career job seekers, recent graduates, and career changers who want to explore healthcare without jumping straight into a multi‑year degree program. And importantly, they’re stepping stones to the future.
A Day in the Life: What the Work Looks Like
Patient care support roles are fast‑paced, meaningful, and deeply human. Every day looks a little different, but most include:
- Assisting with daily patient needs
- Monitoring basic health indicators
- Supporting nurses and clinical teams
- Providing comfort and reassurance
- Building relationships with children and families
For many team members, those relationships are the heart of the job.
Mariya Sturdivant, a Clinical Assistant in the Hematology/Oncology Clinic, says her interactions with patients sets the tone for both children and their parents. “When families first get to the clinic, the first person they see is me,” she says. “I take patients’ vitals, and we have an area where we’re able to play with the children. I get them toys or coloring, and I get beaten so much in Candy Land here.”
In the Emergency Department, the work looks different but is no less meaningful. Kaylee Ellison, Unit Support Specialist, works the 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift, where every moment matters. “You never know what you’ll see, but children need you,” she says.
The work has shaped her in ways she didn’t expect. “It gives you more compassion for people because you never know what’s going on with the kids and parents you see out in the world,” says Ellison. Supporting families during some of their hardest moments requires emotional strength. “It’s not an easy job,” she adds, “and it takes a special person to work in a level one trauma center with children.”
Why These Roles Are So Accessible
One of the biggest advantages of patient care support roles is the low barrier to entry. Many positions require minimal prior experience or schooling, making them ideal for:
- People exploring healthcare for the first time
- Individuals switching careers
- Recent graduates unsure of their next step
- Anyone who wants meaningful work without years of training
Sturdivant’s story reflects just how accessible these roles can be. She began at Children’s in 2020 working in housekeeping. “When I started here, I just liked the environment; the people are really nice,” she says. “Talking to different patients and seeing what they’re going through changed my perspective on what I wanted in my life.”
She later joined a training program that introduced her to clinical work. “We did a few weeks of different things like CPR classes, ED training, and inpatient/outpatient training. That gave me an idea of how everything worked here.”
Her advice to anyone considering a role at Children’s is simple: “Just go for it. If you think that’s what you want to do, then go for it. There are a lot of opportunities here.”
Accessible doesn’t mean easy. These roles require professionalism, compassion, and reliability. But they’re designed to welcome people who are ready to learn and grow.
Real Growth, Real Pathways: Where This Career Can Take You
Patient care support roles are not the finish line—they’re the starting point. Many PCTs go on to become:
- Registered Nurses (RNs)
- Specialized clinical technicians
- Unit coordinators or administrative leaders
- Professionals in specialty areas like oncology, emergency medicine, or radiology
Sturdivant is a perfect example of how far these roles can take employees. After becoming a Clinical Assistant in 2023, she discovered a passion for radiology. “I start school in August, and Children’s is helping with the tuition,” she says. “I’ll be studying radiology. When I’m finished, I’ll be a radiology technician. That’s my goal.”
Her journey—from housekeeping to clinical assistant to future radiology tech—shows exactly what’s possible when you start in a patient care support role.
Children’s of Alabama invests in its people. Through tuition support, mentorship, and exposure to multiple specialties, team members are encouraged to grow into the careers they envision for themselves.
